According to reports in the Portuguese press, both Benfica and Crystal Palace had made offers of €6 million for PSV keeper Jeroen Zoet in recent days but the Dutch outfit’s demands have now made it almost impossible for Benfica to follow through on a deal, leaving the path open for Frank de Boer’s Eagles.
After the departure of Steve Mandanda at the start of the summer transfer window, it’s been obvious that the club are in desperate need of reinforcement between the sticks but until now, we’ve been forced to make do with the services of Wayne Hennessey and Julian Speroni.
Whilst the English press have been linking us with a move for young Newcastle stopper Freddie Woodman in recent days, any deal involving the 20-year-old would almost certainly see Hennessey retain his place as the team’s number one for the immediate future, making a sustained pursuit of Zoet all the more feasible.
During our humbling 3-0 defeat at home to Huddersfield on the opening day of the season, it became painfully obvious that the Welsh keeper is simply not comfortable enough with having the ball at his feet to flourish in the tactical set-up favoured by his new manager, leading plenty of fans to voice their anguish whilst the game was still taking place.
I have nothing personal against Wayne and will always be thankful for the effort he puts in from week to week but I will admit to having huge doubts about our prospects for Premier League success this season, with him in the team. In Zoet, we would be getting what looks to be a genuine upgrade and for that reason, I’m all for a deal being done in the next few days.
Until now, we’ve seen the club make just one permanent transfer this summer in Jairo Riedewald from Ajax but with time beginning to run out before the deadline, you’d hope some more deals are in the pipeline as we speak.
Are you happy with the fee being demanded for Zoet as per the report attached above?
