Within the last 24 hours, Crystal Palace have been linked to an ambitious move for RB Leipzig starlet Oliver Burke, who is supposedly having trouble adapting to life in the Bundesliga.
Still only 20, Burke spent ten years as a part of Nottingham Forest’s academy before being called up to the first-team by fellow Scot and Palace legend Dougie Freedman in December of 2015. With the youngster viewing Freedman as something of a mentor, his game went from strength to strength and he bagged his first goal for Forest later that month against Cardiff City.
Making 21 appearances during that campaign, Burke earned himself a new deal at the City Ground but after a startling run of goalscoring form under new boss Philippe Montanier in 2016/17, (four goals in five league games) the club’s owner sanctioned his move to RB Leipzig for a fee believed to be £13 million; a record for any transfer involving a Scottish player.
Despite his new club having only just won promotion to the German top flight, the money being poured into player recruitment helped them take the division by storm, eventually finishing second behind champions Bayern Munich. Although Burke started brightly, providing an assist for Naby Keita to score the only goal of the game after coming on in the 69th minute, Burke has struggled for regular game-time ever since.
Whilst the man himself has spoken this summer of wanting to knuckle down and make a success of things in Leipzig this term, the above report suggests in no uncertain terms that his club would be open to letting him go within the next week or so, if the price is right. Obviously, it’s difficult to know for sure if a player who is still so young would hit the ground running in SE25 but I certainly wouldn’t be against the idea of bringing a player of such obvious talent into the football club.
Having read the report attached above, what do you think about the deal in prospect?
