It looks to all intents and purposes as though Manchester United youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah is on his way to Crystal Palace on a season-long loan deal but what can Eagles expect from the Dutchman during his stay?
Already well known to Frank de Boer given the Ajax connection they share, Tim is almost certainly well versed in the wing-back system the new Palace gaffer is likely to implement at Selhurst Park. Highly thought of by fans and coaches alike at Old Trafford, it’s hoped that he will slot in seamlessly, offering Frank another defensive option with which to approach the opening game of the season at home to Huddersfield on Saturday afternoon.
Whilst loan moves may not be to everybody’s taste, the inclusion of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fosu-Mensah, alongside the permanent arrival of Jairo Riedewald point towards a distinct effort on the part of the manager to implement a more possession based style in SE25, without forcing the less technically gifted within our ranks to alter their own games too dramatically.
Obviously, as we have seen with the Mamadou Sakho saga this summer, loans rarely work out well for the receiving club in the long-term but if the pair who have come in this summer can usher in a new, successful style of play, it bodes well for the recruitment process in future windows, when de Boer has truly got his feet under the table in Beckenham.
It appears as though we’re edging towards a starting back three of Riedewald on the left, Dann and in the centre and Fosu-Mensah on the right when we welcome the Terriers in a few days time but that may just be me jumping the gun a tad. What I do know from speaking to United’s supporters, is that Tim has looked better than ever in pre-season with almost everyone convinced that he’s set for something of a breakout year in red and blue.
From what I can see on the excellent video attached at the top of the page, we’ve got ourselves a real player.
