After losing Steve Mandanda to Marseille a few weeks ago, Palace have made no secret of their desire to secure the services of another goalkeeper before the August transfer window closes and now it looks as though we may be in for PSV man Jeroen Zoet.
Last summer, Mandanda’s arrival from Marseille was supposed to solve the niggles we’d been having with Wayne Hennessey’s prolonged presence in between the sticks but with the Frenchman failing to ever settle in South London to a multitude of differing factors, we were left using the Welshman for the majority of the campaign, much to the ire of large sections of the club’s fan-base.
Feedback on Zoet varies depending on who you speak to within the game but from my own perspective, his arrival would certainly represent an upgrade on the options currently available to his countryman Frank de Boer.
Yesterday’s home friendly against Schalke saw club legend Julian Speroni given a start in front of the Selhurst Park faithful, giving an indication that the boss may we’ll decide to keep him there for the visit of Huddersfield next week if a new man can’t be signed in time. It’s a move which will please many given the goodwill our fans feel towards the Argentine but no one is willing to pretend that his recall to the side represents anything over than a short-term fix whilst we wait for solid reinforcements to arrive.
The next seven days promise to be extremely busy behind the scenes at Palace. With the season now looming large, we have little choice but to add to the squad in two or three positions if we are serious about building a solid platform from which de Boer can implement the changes he would like to.
Would you take Zoet based on the video attached above?
