If you were unable to make it to yesterday’s friendly against Schalke at Selhurst Park, you can watch highlights of the game via the link attached below.
In what was Frank de Boer’s first ever home game as Crystal Palace manager, he gave starts to new signings Jairo Riedewald and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, as well as a home debut for academy man Jason Lokilo, who appears to have really impressed the Dutchman during the opening weeks of his tenure in SE25.
Elsewhere there were also starts for Wilfried Zaha, Andros Townsend and Julian Speroni, with the latter’s inclusion in the XI setting tongues wagging over a possible recall to the side in place of Wayne Hennessey when the Premier League season gets underway at home to Huddersfield next weekend.
Although many left the game frustrated at not having seen the Eagles pick up a victory, Schalke represented a stern test for de Boer and his players and for the most part, it was a challenge we dealt with in a relatively impressive manner. Loftus-Cheek was arguably the side’s standout performer on the day, showing everyone why he remains so highly rated at Stamford Bridge but for those of a red and blue persuasion the display put on by Jason Lokilo will bring the biggest sense of satisfaction.
Plenty wondered if de Boer’s talk of integrating academy prospects into the first-team set-up would ever actually be followed up on but it’s taken just a handful of games for many to realise that he seems deadly serious about pushing Lokilo into the spotlight this season and for that, he deserves real credit.
Friendlies may be nothing like the competitive games that are to follow but with a few days still to go until the madness of Premier League football comes back into our lives, tide yourself over with highlights of yesterday’s game.
