Frank de Boer is still in the extremely early stages of his time as Crystal Palace manager, making the below video interview with him and the rest of the managers in the Asia Trophy essential viewing for Eagles fans.
I don’t think I’m alone in saying that full summer without competitive football has been a rather difficult spell to slog through but with Premier League football now less than a month away, things are beginning to swing into gear once more, with the above interview offering an interesting perspective on the opinions of de Boer and his contemporaries as the prepare to do battle over the next nine months or so.
Given the huge sums of money sloshing around in the Premier League, all four men speak candidly about the issues surrounding youth development for England’s top clubs, with both de Boer and Klopp having had first-hand experience of what it takes to test and improve young players at huge European clubs in the past.
Whilst Pulis, Klopp and Shakespeare are all fully up to speed with their players and the demands of the league as a whole, de Boer is still learning the ropes to some extent, making his insights on the footballing landscape in the UK all the more intriguing, particularly when the conversation moves, inevitably, to the astronomical transfer fees being splashed out by English clubs this summer.
Of course, Frank is fully aware of the differences he will encounter during his time in England compared to Holland or Italy but with Palace still waiting to make their first permanent signing of the summer, he’s learning quickly that having a larger transfer kitty than the majority of Europe’s clubs doesn’t necessarily guarantee an easy run in the market.
The entire interview makes for an entertaining and eye-opening watch, both in terms of de Boer’s comments and the views of the other men on the panel. If you get the opportunity to give it a watch, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
