There has been a fair bit of talk in recent days over a bid for Calum Chambers from Crystal Palace and whilst plenty of Eagles fans have expressed doubts over the move, it looks as though Arsenal fans are gutted at the thought of selling him.
Whilst Calum has always struggled to establish himself in Arsene Wenger’s first-team plans at The Emirates, I would suggest that our fans should think twice before writing him off completely as a viable option for Frank de Boer and Palace. Undoubtedly hugely talented and still only 22, the six foot defender has simply hit the wall that countless young footballers do when making the move to one of English’s “super clubs” before they’re established enough to demand a spot in the starting XI.
A regular appearance maker for England at youth level and with three senior caps to his name too, Chambers spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough, playing 26 times and proving to many of his doubters that he does in fact have what it takes to perform regularly in the Premier League. There will always be people who reference Boro’s relegation as a black mark against his name but anyone with a grain of sense will realise that one defender cannot single-handedly drag a poorly assembled squad away from the drop-zone.
For those of you who remain sceptical of Chambers’ talents after reading the article attached at the top of the page, it’s probably worth remembering that during their time together at Southampton, coaches and fans alike could barely seperate he and Nathaniel Clyne ability-wise, giving everyone an insight into how highly-rated he was at the start of his professional career. When you consider the fact that he’s four years younger than the Palace academy graduate, it’s a view that should make a rather large impact on your perception of him as a player.
Give the article attached at the top of the page a few minutes of your time and let us know how you feel about the proposed move. Similarly, to any Arsenal fans reading, would you be sad to see him go?
