Frank de Boer’s Choice Of Captain Casts Doubt Over Dann’s Palace Future

Yesterday morning saw new Crystal Palace boss Frank de Boer confirm that Jason Puncheon would be keeping the role of captain for the 2017-18 Premier League season; a decision which casts significant doubt over the future of Scott Dann.

These quotes from de Boer will be music to the ears of Jason Puncheon but are likely to leave Dann wondering where he stands.

18 months ago, the mere thought of Scott Dann not playing an integral role in any Palace manager’s plans was simply unimaginable. The towering centre-back was performing superbly from week to week and looking every inch a leader amongst the Eagles’ back four. Unfortunately for him, persistent injury problems stopped him from playing as regularly as he would have liked last term, with Sam Allardyce turning to the likes of Tomkins, Mamadou Sakho and Martin Kelly in the centre of defence instead.

Now, with a new boss in the dugout in the shape of Frank de Boer, some were hoping that Dann would gain a new lease of life but with interest in Jairo Riedewald, Bruno-Martins Indi and Calum Chambers, the future doesn’t look particularly bright for the former Blackburn man.

Although some view the role as symbolic rather than pivotal, the decision by both Sam Allardyce and now de Boer to give Jason Puncheon the captain’s armband in favour of Dann will come as a blow to the native Scouser.

Having acquired it in quite controversial circumstances during the power-struggle between Alan Pardew and Mile Jedinak, Dann has never really flourished in the role, whereas the extra responsibility Puncheon felt with it on his arm saw his game go up a notch or two last season, with plenty behind the scenes likely to have filled Frank in on the subject in the last few weeks.

Dann is currently on tour with the team out in Hong Kong and is expected to play a full role in both of the scheduled games but where his long-term future lies is anyone’s guess.

I think your point about him not flourishing in the role is the important issue here. I wouldn’t read any more into it unless of course we are in the market for another CB. Even then I think Delaney and Kelly would suffer ahead of Dann.

If a large offer has come in from the Chinese then that money could well be put to good use. Given all the rubbish info coming from the media however I think it would be wise to wait until something actually happens before hypothesising further.

I think he had a bad year last year. Injuries and Pards woeful defensive tactics meant his form dipped. That, combined with the fact we kept rushing him back meant the injuries kept recurring. I agree with Richard that Damo and Kelly are more likely to be sold – despite them being worth significantly less.

However, if we do sign Riedewald & Martins-Indi (until both are announced neither is official. I pray the delay for Riedewald isn’t the production of some lame viral video) then that leaves 6 CBs fighting for 2/3 starting berths. Whilst Damo and Kelly would gladly play back up and do not expect to start every game, Dann will want to be starting when fit. It wasn’t so long ago he was linked to Arsenal & Everton and touted as an England player. If gametime isn’t an option he will surely want to move on and reignite his career. I can see him going to Burnley for 10-15mil as a replacement for Keane

I would happily see Damo and Kelly shipped out long before the idea of Dann leaving ever crosses FdB’s mind, for the sake of clarity.

Agreed. Given FDB’s line up for the Liverpool game I am hoping for a back 3 of Martins-Indi-Dann-Tomkins to start the first game of the season. That would be lethal!

Where would you play Riedewald, mate?

Cover at CB or CDM while he bulks up for the premier league then starting CB when he is a bit bulkier. Given Tomkins/Kelly/Damo/Danns fitness record he would still play a lot of games. Also a LB in back four if we need a defensive minded player.

Fair points all round. Hopefully it’s finalised ASAP.
