With Crystal Palace widely expected to announce the signing of Ajax defender Jairo Riedewald at some stage on Tuesday afternoon, the below video offers a great insight into the sort of player Frank de Boer and the Eagles will be getting.
Having been given his big break in the game by de Boer, the 20-year-old will be well aware of the positive impact the gaffer can have on him during their time together in SE25, with his comfort in possession and eye for a pass almost certain to serve him well in the Premier League over the course of the 2017/18 season and beyond.
Happy to occupy a number of different positions on the pitch, Jairo should, in theory at least, offer de Boer a great deal of tactical flexibility during his first year as a manager on these shores, bringing with him a deep understanding of the Dutch footballing philosophy that is so ingrained in the boss and the new members of the coaching staff.
Whilst no one should fool themselves into thinking that Riedewald’s early months in English football are set to be a walk in the park, his particular strengths should serve him well if he can get to grips with the physical nature of the game in relatively quick time.
There will always be a number of sceptical voices raised when a player makes their way into the Premier League from the Eredivisie but in Riedewald, the club have snared themselves the proud owner of the highest pass completion percentage (92.4%) of any player in the division last season; a statistic that would be impressive in any setting but one that is made all the more exciting when you think about Jairo’s age and role within the side.
I’m always a tad careful with any YouTube footage of a new signing, given the tendency vloggers have to jazz things up beyond reality but in the above video, you are given a filter and spin-free example of Riedewald’s game warts and all. Filmed when he was just 18, I guarantee you’ll be excited by what you see.
