VIDEO: This Footage Of Jairo Riedewald’s Game Will Excite All Palace Fans

With Crystal Palace widely expected to announce the signing of Ajax defender Jairo Riedewald at some stage on Tuesday afternoon, the below video offers a great insight into the sort of player Frank de Boer and the Eagles will be getting.

This video shows Riedewald’s attributes perfectly. He looks to be a ludicrously confident footballer for one so young.

Having been given his big break in the game by de Boer, the 20-year-old will be well aware of the positive impact the gaffer can have on him during their time together in SE25, with his comfort in possession and eye for a pass almost certain to serve him well in the Premier League over the course of the 2017/18 season and beyond.

Happy to occupy a number of different positions on the pitch, Jairo should, in theory at least, offer de Boer a great deal of tactical flexibility during his first year as a manager on these shores, bringing with him a deep understanding of the Dutch footballing philosophy that is so ingrained in the boss and the new members of the coaching staff.

Whilst no one should fool themselves into thinking that Riedewald’s early months in English football are set to be a walk in the park, his particular strengths should serve him well if he can get to grips with the physical nature of the game in relatively quick time.

There will always be a number of sceptical voices raised when a player makes their way into the Premier League from the Eredivisie but in Riedewald, the club have snared themselves the proud owner of the highest pass completion percentage (92.4%) of any player in the division last season; a statistic that would be impressive in any setting but one that is made all the more exciting when you think about Jairo’s age and role within the side.

I’m always a tad careful with any YouTube footage of a new signing, given the tendency vloggers have to jazz things up beyond reality but in the above video, you are given a filter and spin-free example of Riedewald’s game warts and all. Filmed when he was just 18, I guarantee you’ll be excited by what you see.

Enjoy.

For what we paid we are not going to get a Bobby Moore ,Sakho or even a Scott Dann. This video shows us very little. but he is young guy let us give him a chance to settle in, warm the bench, get some cup football under his belt and see how he develops. I wish him well.

I think you’ll find the club have bigger plans for him than that, Malcolm. This was footage from a single game when he was just 18, I can’t think of any defender we’ve got who showed that sort of composure at the same age.

6 or 7 instances of good defending, a lot of balls played sideways or backwards and 6 or 7 instances of playing team mates into trouble. Not overly convinced to be honest!!

Just for clarity, Slips. It was footage from a single game, against European opposition, at the age of 18. I don’t know of a single defender on our books who was as comfortable and composed on the ball at that age. You can only beat what is put in front of you after all.

He looks small and very left footed.
He won’t get that much time and space in the Premier league!
He is still young and clearly has a lot of potential for the future and seems like a bargain signing.

It was two years ago too Willy, think of it like this, do we have any defender on our books who was that composed and technically sound at 18?

For gods sake you lot cheer up, we’re getting a good young defender that looks comfortable on the ball and doesn’t hoof it into row z in a panic. We’re not going to get sakho and we’re not going to get a world class defender. Obviously de boar knows this kid well and thinks he’ll fit in well, give him a chance.

Listen to Gordon, Gordon talks sense.

I think the same as most posters in that I got bored after a few minutes of watching sideways passing…oh how we all howl when Delaney and Dann do that..only for it to be hoofed up the pitch.
I think the problem with this clip is how HLTCO sold it to us in the lead up to viewing it..”guaranteed to be excited by what you see..” ..clearly we weren’t but take that out of the equation and view it for what it is…clips from the same game a few years ago…and I agree we may be onto a winner here…if he joins !
My problem is I cant see us adapting to FDB’s way…or is that LVG in disguise 😉

It depends what you view as “exciting”, Steve. Personally, I was and still am hugely excited at the prospect of signing a 20-year-old who (at the age of 18) was capable of looking as calm and composed as Riedewald on the ball here.

We have seldom had a defender with the same technical attributes.
