Earlier today, Crystal Palace officially announced their first signing of the 2017/18 summer window with Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek arriving on a season-long loan from Chelsea. If the video attached below is anything to go by, we’ve got ourselves quite a player.
Whilst some have voiced concerns over the club’s decision to bring in a player on loan rather than going into the market for a permanent purchase, there is no denying that Loftus-Cheek comes with a rather impressive pedigree. Despite having a relative lack of game time to his name, the midfielder is seen as one of Chelsea’s brightest young prospects with many of their fans feeling as though a full England call-up could well be on the cards if things go as well as expected at Selhurst Park.
Comfortable playing across the midfield, Loftus-Cheek is seemingly happiest when occupying the “number 10” role tucked in just behind the striker; a position that he could potentially fill in a central midfield trio with Cabaye and Milivojevic acting as holding players but that’s just me speculating over de Boer’s plans rather than commenting on anything that has been said in an official capacity.
In line with his role as an advanced midfielder, the 21-year-old is looked upon as a goalscorer, with the above video presenting more than a hint of a certain Frank Lampard’s attacking instincts around the edge of the penalty area. Whilst we shouldn’t expect great things from Ruben immediately, it’s obvious that he has been brought in with the intention of getting regular game time rather than simply warming the bench, which, if he does manage to live up to the hype, can only bode well for both he and us over the next nine months.
As always, try not to get too excited when watching the video attached at the top of the page but looking back, I can’t remember the club having a genuine goalscorer operating in the number 10 role since a certain Darren Ambrose was on our books and he didn’t do too badly during his time with us.
