Crystal Palace have been linked with a move for Ajax youngster Jairo Riedewald for the last week or so but now it looks as though Everton are ready to come in and steal him from underneath the Eagles’ noses.
Having supposedly given up any hope of sorting out a deal for Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho after realising that the Reds valued the Frenchman too highly, Riedewald was seen as the perfect substitute. Young, versatile and talented, the Dutch international who was given his debut by Frank de Boer was expected to arrive at Selhurst Park in the not too distant future but now, it looks as though Koeman has decided to throw his hat into the ring too.
Everton’s transfer policy this summer began as something of interest to neutrals everywhere; a sign that the Merseysiders were geared up to have a serious go at breaking into the Champions League places for good but as the days and weeks have worn on, it’s beginning to feel as though they’re bidding for anything that moves, like a newly minted lottery winner frittering away their winnings on lovely but totally unnesecary sports cars to fill an already fully-stocked garage.
You would hope that Riedewald’s previous solid working relationship with de Boer will work in our favour but with Everton back to almost break even for the summer after the windfall they received from the sale of Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United, we’re almost certainly unable to match the financial package they’re willing to put in front of the Dutchman when push comes to shove.
It could be nothing more than a storm in a teacup but after stories surfaced of Everton’s desire to steal away Christian Benteke with the intention of making him nothing more than their second striker, I would feel foolish in ruling anything out.
