Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo have suggested that Barcelona keeper Jasper Cillessan could well make a move to Crystal Palace this summer, after speculation began earlier in the week.
Despite the gulf in class between Cillessan’s current employers and Crystal Palace, the Dutchman is well known to Frank de Boer, having played under him at Ajax, making a move from the Catalan super-club to SE25 far more likely than it would have been a few months ago.
With last summer’s star purchase Steve Mandanda seemingly desperate to escape Selhurst Park and move back to Marseille before the new season gets underway, Palace are almost certainly going to be keen to strengthen in between the sticks before August rolls around.
Whilst Julian Speroni is and always will be a legend amongst the Eagles faithful, his advancing years rule out any real chance of him regaining the number one jersey and in Wayne Hennessey, we have a keeper who has struggled to convince large swathes of the fan-base that he has what it takes to hold onto the number one shirt permanently.
Having made the switch to Barcelona last summer for an initial €13 million the 28-year-old will no doubt have been desperate to make a big splash with the Catalan giants but just under a year on, he has one La Liga appearance to his name, after failing to climb above Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the pecking order, adding further fuel to the fire over a potential move across Europe.
It may feel a bit far-fetched at first but the more you read into it, the more likely a deal begins to look.
We’ll follow this story with interest as it develops.
