After Steve Parish told Sirius XM that he has been working on a deal for a player that Frank de Boer “knows well and feels good about” a tweet involving Ajax star Joel Veltman has set tongues wagging throughout Palace’s fan-base.
After being linked with an incredibly pricey move for Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho for the entirety of the summer, both Parish and de Boer are probably keen to find a cheaper alternative, with Veltman ticking boxes on a number of different levels. Admittedly, he may not have the pedigree of the physically imposing Frenchman at first glance but given the close bond he enjoys with de Boer, there is no reason why he couldn’t blossom once given a chance in the Premier League.
Having spent years being linked with players that have experience in the top flight, recent stories involving both Veltman and Kenny Tete are somewhat of a shock to the system for most Palace fans but after giving Frank de Boer a chance to mould the club in his image over the next few years, it’s only right that we then offer him a degree of autonomy over the deals we get done for new players.
A product of the famous Ajax academy, the 25-year-old Veltman has played a total of 165 games in Amsterdam, scoring eight goals in the process. He also has 17 full caps for the Dutch national side under his belt, as well as two goals. Most comfortable operating in the centre of defence, he has also been known to shift onto the right if needed, highlighting the sort of versatility that will be required if he hopes to be a true success in the UK over the next few years.
It’s impossible to know for sure but it feels as though this sort of move simply wouldn’t be on the table for us if it weren’t for Frank de Boer’s presence in SE25. Despite Tottenham’s interest, we appear to be seen as the more likely destination for the defender as things stand.
Keep everything crossed.
