Crystal Palace’s hopes of getting Mamadou Sakho to sign permanently may look slim but according to a Liverpool legend, it would be a disaster if the Frenchman stayed at Anfield next season.
The supposed price-tag of £30 million placed on Sakho’s head by Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool directors is almost certain to be too steep for Palace to entertain this summer but it’s become quite clear over the last few months that Mamadou has next to no future on Merseyside, with fans, club legends and the manager himself going to great lengths to distance themselves from him.
Despite reports of a “personality clash” between Sakho and his manager, I fail to see how anyone could view Liverpool’s other central defensive options as superior, particularly after the season they’ve just had. He does occasionally appear a little erratic with the ball at his feet I’ll admit but this whole saga looks and feels like a personal vendetta against him rather than one based on footballing attributes alone.
For most Reds supporters, Sakho’s decision to induldge in a novelty handshake with Christian Benteke when the Belgian scored both of Palace’s goals at Anfield was the final straw and I would assume Nicol has allowed the same incident to cloud his judgement when making the comments he has on the link attached above.
If they are that desperate to get rid of him we’d be the happy recipients of his services but demanding £30 million for a player you consistently throw digs at in the press is unlikely to prompt a tidalwave of offers.
I had heard that Southampton, Napoli and Lazio were all keeping tabs on Sakho but as of yet no one is believed to have made a firm and formal offer to Liverpool with the man himself away on safari with his family. If Nicol’s sentiments are anything to go by, it’ll be a surprise if he’s not prepared to drive him down to SE25 himself to push a deal over the line.
