We have tonight seen Sam Allardyce release an official statement confirming his immediate departure as manager of Crystal Palace FC.
There are still plenty of supporters who remain sceptical about Allardyce’s true motives for leaving Selhurst Park but going by his official statement alone, it’s difficult to hold any immediate ill will towards him for making the decision he has.
Having seen his reputation tarnished massively by the debacle he endured during his short stint as England manager, he grasped the opportunity offered to him by Steve Parish with both hands and delivered on his promises by keeping the club in the Premier League after panic had set in during the final stages of Alan Pardew’s turbulent tenure.
Although many were desperate to see the big man stay in SE25 for much longer, we will now be forced to act quickly to secure a strong replacement in a bid to build properly ahead of what is sure to be another extremely tough campaign in 2017-18. At the time of writing, there are a multitude of names being thrown around without any real concrete leads but I’m sure the situation will become clearer within the next few days.
When the news first broke this afternoon it felt as though we had another Tony Pulis situation on our hands but if we are to take Sam at his word, the reality is actually far more gentle than the circumstances that surrounded the Welshman’s bitter departure from South London.
Do you feel any resentment towards Allardyce, or are you merely thankful for the work he has done in keeping us afloat?
