Crystal Palace are hoping Big Sam’s presence is enough to sway Jermain Defoe into agreeing a move to Selhurst Park after the Eagles entered a bidding war for the Sunderland striker earlier this week.
The former Spurs man was the subject of intense interest from Palace during the Janauary transfer window but given Sunderland’s desperation to stave off relegation, they turned us away, despite the fact that they’ll now be forced to see him leave the North East for nothing this summer.
Having already worked with the prolific frontman whilst in charge of the Black Cats, Big Sam is no doubt salivating at the prospect of Defoe being thrown into a squad that already includes the likes of Zaha, Townsend and Benteke, regardless of Jermain’s advancing years. Indeed, many wrote the striker off as soon as he made the switch to the MLS, only for him to come back and leave his numerous doubters with egg on their faces when pulling up trees for Sunderland.
Of course, both Bournemouth and West Ham have the added bonus of a previous association with Defoe but after securing a club record fifth successive season in the top flight with victory over Hull City last weekend, it’s fair to say that Crystal Palace are going places under the guidance of Steve Parish and Sam Allardyce. Plenty will automatically assume we have little to no chance of landing him but I wouldn’t be so sure just yet.
With Wilfried Zaha all set to sign a bumper new five-year contract on a rumoured weekly wage of £110,000 and a possible £30 million permanent deal for Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho in the offing, we are yet to get any concrete estimations of Palace’s overall transfer budget this summer but I would imagine the club would be able to accomodate Defoe’s demands, given the absence of a transfer fee.
Do you feel Defoe would be a worthwhile move for us or should we be focussing our attention elsewhere?
