Chrsitian Benteke may have scored both of Crystal Palace’s goals against Liverpool on Sunday but it was the tracksuited Mamadou Sakho who grabbed more of the post-match headlines from the sidelines.
Many had assumed that Sakho (still technically a Liverpool player) would be a picture of calm in the Crystal Palace dugout throughout Sunday’s clash but after the Frenchman was spotted high-fiving every member of the home side’s bench prior to kick-off it was clear that he had no intention of sitting in silence as the Eagles spoiled the party.
Benteke to his credit, refused to celebrate either of his goals in the immediate aftermath of the ball hitting the back of the net but, the Sky Sports cameras did pick up the Belgian making his way over to the sideline shortly after his equaliser to indulge in what looked to a pre-determined game of “rock, paper, scissors” with his teammate and close friend Sakho.
It’s fair to say that Jamie Carragher (in the commentary booth) and a large proportion of Liverpool’s online fan-base were absolutely fuming with the actions of their towering centre-back, with the backlash directed towards Sakho on Twitter leading many to assume that he’s just signed his own death warrant in the minds of the Merseyside faithful.
In truth, Klopp’s attitude towards the French international over the last year or so has led many to believe that he’d be moved on in the summer regardless but if there had been any doubt in the German’s mind over Sakho’s possible return, yesterday’s antics are likely to have extinguished the chance of it once and for all.
Winning three times on the spin at Anfield is incredibly sweet by itself. Doing so with Sakho stealing the headlines from the side of the pitch is just the icing on the cake.
