Having recently announced his decision to leave Chelsea at the end of the current season, John Terry is believed to favour a summer move to Crystal Palace over a number of other suitors.
Whilst the Eagles faithful are still desperately hoping that Big Sam can convince Liverpool loanee Mamadou Sakho to make his stay at Selhurst Park permanent, any significant snag over a deal with the Frenchman is likely to elevate the Chelsea legend further up Palace’s list of targets, given his wealth of experience at the top of the English game.
Sam Allardyce is known to be a keen admirer of the Blues long-time captain and would almost certainly have no qualms about coughing up the £80,000-a-week wage packet that Terry is after but I would imagine Palace’s fan-base is significantly split over the prospect of welcoming Terry into the fold.
Whilst it’s flattering to think that a player as decorated as Terry is keen on joining the club, I can’t help but think we’d be better served by signing a far younger man, rather than opting for a short-term fix. Having seen Martin Kelly shifted into the middle to cover for the injured Dann and Tomkins, the thought of replacing a loanee with a 36-year-old doesn’t exactly leave me brimming with joy but what do I know? I just run a website.
There has been talk in recent days of another summer bid for Anderlecht defender Kara Mbodji, who at 27, seems like a far better long-term option for us. Yes, the Senegal man remains unproven in the Premier League but as Luka Milivojevic has shown since joining the club from Olympiakos; top players are more than capable of making a successful transition between leagues when given the right support from their coaches and teammates.
With Palace seemingly high on Terry’s wish-list, I’m keen to hear your thoughts on a possible move for him. Would you like to see it?
