Wilfried Zaha has been heavily linked with a summer move to Tottenham Hotspur all season long but Paul Merson is adamant that the winger should turn Spurs down and remain in SE25 for years to come.
Whilst the Sky Sports pundit has got a reputation for spouting rather ridiculous views, his take on Zaha’s current dilemma is actually incredibly well thought out. I’ll be honest, I couldn’t quite believe what I was reading when I first saw the comments but as they say, even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Yesterday’s game against Leicester City saw Zaha take centre stage in the stands as the Holmesdale Fanatics honoured the academy graduate with a display for reaching 250 appearances in red and blue a week or so ago. It is hoped, both within our fan-base and at boardroom level that such expressions of adoration will be enough to convince the Ivory Coast international to commit his long-term future to the club this summer.
Normally, I would attempt to lay out the reasoning behind Zaha turning down Spurs myself but to my surprise, Merson has done an absolutely fantastic job of highlighting exactly why the winger would be better served by staying in SE25 within the piece attached above. I’m sure one or two of their fans will claim that it’s a consequence of the pundit’s association with Arsenal but quite honestly, it’s incredibly difficult to find fault in anything he says.
Obviously, from a personal perspective, I can see the immediate attraction of a move to Spurs for any professional footballer but in Zaha’s case specifically, there are numerous factors to take into account before blindly assuming it will be a beneficial switch for him in the long run. I’m sure he’s got plenty of people advising him over what to do this summer but by saying what he has above, Merson has shown himself to be more switched on than many.
Who would have guessed?
