The Premier League season is now entering the home straight, causing Palace fans everywhere to bite their nails over whether or not the Eagles will survive the drop. Ahead of Monday night’s home clash with Arsenal, the Sky Sports pundits have been having their say on who they feel is most likely to fall into the second tier in May.
Despite securing an absolutely massive victory away to Chelsea last weekend, Palace are still just three points clear of the dreaded drop zone after falling to a 3-1 defeat at St Mary’s on Wednesday evening. Now, with just a handful of games left in the current campaign, the Palace faithful could be forgiven for worrying aloud over their prospects of a prolonged stay at English football’s top table.
After Hull won and Swansea crashed to a late defeat at home to Tottenham, the fight for the third relegation place looks as though it is going to go down to the wire, with Palace’s cause not being helped by a rather daunting fixture list. Whilst Allardyce and co. do have home games against Leicester, Hull City and Burnley still to come, trips to Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United also loom on the horizon. It is unquestionably squeaky bum time in SE25.
Keeping all of that in mind, the final predictions of Sky Sports’ “expert” panel attached above make for extremely interesting reading from a Palace perspective. Perhaps it’s just me being stereotypically negative but I will readily admit to being staggered by the confidence levels shown in Big Sam and the boys by men who are paid to give an informed insight into the Premier League.
Let’s just hope they’re not left with egg on their faces in May.
