VIDEO: Palace’s Players Were Taking Liberties At Chelsea In The 80th Minute

When Crystal Palace appointed Sam Allardyce as their new manager back in December, the plan was to take us back to basics but yesterday, his players produced some liquid football when beating Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

This video shows Palace playing some wonderfully intriciate football in the 80th minute yesterday. It’s a joy to watch.

Whilst no one would deny that the Eagles were forced to defend manfully for the vast majority of yesterday’s encounter, they did have one or two golden chances to extend their lead further in the second half, thanks in no small part to the attacking intent shown by the likes of Zaha, Benteke and Townsend in the final third.

Built upon the solid base provided by our back four, Palace’s midfield foursome and Big Ben grew in confidence and desire as the game wore on, doing everything they could to keep the heat off our defenders from the moment we took the lead in the 11th minute.

After the gung-ho approach adopted by Alan Pardew, the transformation to our play under Big Sam has been utterly mind boggling. Not only have we now won four games on the bounce, we’ve done so whilst conceding just one goal, which is testament to the boss’ methods on the training ground.

With that in mind, it would be easy for casual observers to assume that our football under him would be rather robust but as you can see via the link above, the lads are playing some scintillating stuff. I won’t lie, I had my own preconceptions about Allardyce’s prior to his arrival but as each week goes by, he’s proving that many of the stereotypes associated with his tactics are laughably innacurate.

Have a look for yourself, the above passage of play is about as far away from “hoofball” as it’s possible to get.

I hate to say it but I was one who was disappointed with big Sam’s appointment but as the weeks go by I’m having to swallow my pride and reluctantly admit he has done wonders with the squad. The players are now playing to their potential. As Conte said he couldn’t understand why a squad with our talent was languishing where we are in the division. Sam has got their confidence back and their belief in themselves.

It’s amazing to see what he’s done, Ben. I wasn’t anywhere near as sceptical as you when he was appointed but I’ve certainly been shocked at how much he’s got out of the squad so far. It’s mad.

Whilst I was nowhere near as glum as you regarding Big Sam’s appointment, I will happily admit to being stunned by the reaction he’s generated from our players. He’s a magician.
