Liverpool legend turned BT Sport pundit Steven Gerrard has slated Crystal Palace’s players following their recent dismal run of form in the Premier League.
Recent months have seen plenty of talking heads suggesting that the Eagles have way too much quality within their ranks to suffer the indignity of relegation in May but after a string of embarrassing results, things don’t look great for Sam Allardyce and his coaching staff.
As supporters, there is an understandable urge to question why the famed “new manager bounce” never materialised following the former England boss’ arrival but after such a shambolic 12 months under the guidance of Alan Pardew, it’s difficult for the sane ones amongst us to not point the finger of blame directly at the players who are paid to represent us from week to week.
Whilst there will no doubt be plenty of Palace fans who don’t take kindly to an “outsider” in Gerrard being so critical of our players, I for one welcome his scathing input on the situation, given the prolonged run of poor form we’ve all had to watch through gritted teeth from the stands.
Backed up by Rio Ferdinand and Jermaine Jenas, Gerrard vocalises the exact gripes thousands of us have had with the players for much of the current season, referencing the money spent by the board, Big Sam’s track record and the fantastic home atmosphere that our players are blessed with, whilst ripping them apart for their lack of fight.
As someone with such a high profile within the game, I personally cannot see a downside to the former Reds skipper getting dug into our players. There is no ulterior motive at play here from Gerrard, it’s merely a passionate and justifiably critical assessment of the currrent performance levels within our football club.
Hopefully one or two of them were listening at the time. It needed saying.
