Christian Benteke has now scored 10 goals in 22 appearances for Crystal Palace, the most of any player in a single season since the club were promoted back in 2013.
Having begun Tuesday night’s FA Cup Third Round Replay on the bench, the Belgian was called upon with the Eagles trailing 1-0 heading into the closing stages, bagging a brace from the bench which nudged him into double figures for the season ahead of an enticing clash with Everton at Selhurst Park tomorrow afternoon.
Although never quite settling at Anfield following his move from Aston Villa, few if any doubted that Christian was still a lethal finisher given the right conditions in which to work. His switch to Crystal Palace last summer was seen by the club’s fans as a real statement of intent; a view that has been backed up by his impressive goal tally heading into the second half of the season.
It should be said that Benteke hasn’t completely won over the Eagles faithful just yet, with plenty affording themselves the occasional grumble over a lack of work-rate at the head of the side. It would also be remiss of me not to mention a pair of missed penalties from him which have cost us dearly against West Ham and Watford respectively but you would hope that both his and the team’s confidence will grow off the back of his midweek exploits against Bolton Wanderers, setting us up for a change of fortune in the next few weeks.
Loic Remy’s return to full fitness could also help Benteke, given the quality the Frenchman has demonstrated on the ball but for the time being, we are likely to continue with him acting as a lone striker when squaring up to Premier League opposition.
Let’s hope the big man can pull off another moment of magic against the Toffees tomorrow, rivalling his superb looping header at Goodison Park earlier in the campaign. You wouldn’t put it past him.
