Amidst talk of an imminent move to Crystal Palace, Manchester United legend Patrice Evra has uploaded a cryptic Instagram messsge relating to his “future”.
Despite his advancing years, (he’s now 35) Evra is still looked upon by many neutrals as an extremely handy option to have on the left-hand side of a defence; a position that has been a constant problem for the Palace hierarchy since Pape Souare’s car accident in the opening weeks of the current campaign.
With Sam Allardyce having spoken at length about the need to strengthen the team’s defensive options during the January transfer window, a move for Evra would make a great deal of sense, given the monstrous level of experience the Frenchman has accumulated over the years.
Of course, his age is a genuine concern when weighing up his long-term use to the club but when you consider the precarious position we currently occupy in the Premier League table, Big Sam and co. can hardly be criticised for looking towards the immediate future rather than planning four years in advance.
Whilst there has been talk of moves for Jeffrey Schlupp and Patrick Van Aanholt too, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Palace management making more than one left-sided signing before the month draws to a close, if only to ensure that we’re not left scrambling for makeshift cover in defence when the heat is really on in the crunch games that are set to arrive in April and May.
As you would expect, Evra is taking the speculation in his stride, using social media and more specifically his Instagram account in the best way possible. Hopefully it all culminates in an official announcement over the former Manchester United man’s future before too long. It would be a real boost for the club after a horrible few months.
