Yesterday’s 1-1 draw between Watford and Crystal Palace took an unexpected twist when the Hornet’s mascot decided to mock Wilfried Zaha for “diving” following the end of the game.
The obsession Watford fans have with Wilfried Zaha is no secret, having been born on the day of the 2013 play-off final and only intensified since.
Evidently, winning a stonewall penalty at Wembley to send Palace into the Premier League at their expense was a step too far for the Hornets’ faithful, who appear to all have their own personal axe to grind with the Palace academy graduate.
I’m sure it’s not helped by the fact that he’s more talented than anyone in their current squad but just like a boy pulling a girl’s hair in the school playground, they’ve got to demonstrate their infatuation with the lad in an imaginative fashion.
If you are able to have a conversation with a sane Watford fan, I know it’s not an easy task but I’ve managed to track a few down over the last 24 hours, you’ll hear them admit that Zaha has never won a penalty against them through cheating, before quickly stating that they would take him in their team in a heartbeat.
All of this only adds further weight to the claim that the actions of their particularly odd and (judging by his Twitter account) semi-literate mascot are both misguided and pathetic. Still, I’m not sure what else we should expect from a man who voluntarily dresses up in a bee costume and bangs a drum in slapdash fashion for 90 minutes every other Saturday.
If you’re interested, a clip of the apparent dive that angered the Hornet so much can be seen below; it’s just a shame no one two-footed “Harry” on his way down the tunnel. It would have been for the good of the game in the long run.
