Frank Lampard has announced that he will be leaving New York City FC when his current contract expires at the end of 2016, leading plenty of people to suggest that the picture attached below is proof of his imminent arrival at Crystal Palace.
Despite his advancing years, there are still plenty of fans across the Premier League who would happily see Lampard joining their club, if only for his potential goal threat when making cameo appearances from the substitutes’ bench. That being said, it remains a little difficult to see those behind the scenes at Palace busting a gut to lure the former England man to SE25, given the numerous central midfield options that are already on the club’s payroll.
A fair few have suggested a player/coach pathway could be in the offing for Lampard but following a soul-destroying defeat to Burnley and with huge games against Manchester City and Swansea on the immediate horizon it would seem more appropriate for Pardew to work on steadying the ship before welcoming anyone else aboard with open arms.
I’ll admit, the timing of Lampard’s statement, in which he declared that he would be “making an announcement on his future very soon” does fit rather neatly with the picture attached above but it could just be a consequence of fans, bored by the current international break, putting two and two together to get five, regardless of how happy Frank appears to be in the pair’s company.
I think I speak for all of us when I say that defensive reinforcements, particularly on the left-hand side should be the top priority for those inside Palace’s boardroom when 2016 does eventually draw to a close. Perhaps Lampard fancies a dramatic change of position in his final few months as a pro? It would certainly allow him to go out with a bang.
