Crystal Palace are being linked with a January move for Chelsea’s veteran defender Branislav Ivanovic.
Despite playing regularly for the Blues in recent seasons, Ivanovic has found himself out of the first-team picture to a large extent following the arrival of Italian disciplinarian Antonio Conte; a development which has led to suggestions that the defender’s days at Stamford Bridge could well be numbered.
Obviously, at 32 he doesn’t represent a long-term investment for Palace or any of the other clubs vying for his signature but given his experience within the Premier League, it’s little surprise to hear that he has a number of potential suitors making their intentions known well before the January transfer window opens for business.
Known predominantly as a right-back, Ivanovic can also be relied upon to play in the centre of a back four, a fact which will no doubt come as music to Alan Pardew’s ears given the lack of quality strength in depth the Eagles currently have at their disposal from a defensive perspective. Admittedly, pace would be an issue for him from the very start but technically, it’s a story which makes a great deal of sense when looking at what we have as back-up on the flanks.
Obviously, the absence of Pape Souare on the left-hand side is causing major headaches in SE25 of late but given Joel Ward’s natural versatility, the possible arrival of Ivanovic would instantly free the former up to fill in the gap left by the Senegalese full-back’s prolonged absence.
Have a read of the article above and let us know your thoughts on the Chelsea man’s possible switch to Selhurst Park. Speaking from a personal perspective, I certainly wouldn’t be against it for a year or two.
