Having recently tied John Jackson as the most appeared goalkeeper in the history of Crystal Palace FC, Julian Speroni’s status as a club legend is safe forever more; a fact that sees a beaming smile spread across the Argentine’s face.
Whilst the vast majority of modern footballers are well versed in the art of PR, the above comments from Julian come across as honest and heartfelt from the first word until the last, only serving to further the love and adoration that the club’s supporters have felt for him since the first day he arrived in SE25 back in 2004.
Now entering his 13th year with the Eagles, Speroni has seen a multitude of ups and downs from between the sticks and whilst he may now have fallen behind Steve Mandanda and Wayne Hennessey in the Palace pecking order, the contribution he has made to the club’s progress both on and off the field in his time with us will never be forgotten.
It’s rare to hear any footballer speak with such passion and humility about a club and a fan-base as Julian does in the article attached above, but for a man who has always been known to put both his family and football club at the heart of his focus, it’s no surprise to see him speaking with such gratitude and warmth about the time he has spent with us since making the move from Scotland.
I dare say you’ll struggle to think of a single Crystal Palace fan the world over with a bad word to say about Julian; to criticise him would seem utterly ridiculous to anyone who has been present for his 388 (and counting) appearances in red and blue.
As it is often said; if a footballer plays for the name on the front of their shirt, the fans will remember the name on the back. It’s a mantra that Julian Speroni may as well have coined himself.
Enjoy his words.
