Andros Townsend was undoubtedly the star man for Crystal Palace on his debut appearance in Philadelphia last night and he’s been speaking about the experience to Palace TV.
Having started the game in Philadelphia, Townsend posed a constant threat to the Union defence in the 60 minutes he spent on the pitch, patrolling the right flank with a real sense of authority and drive whenever he found the ball at his feet.
It would have been easy for the former Newcastle man to cruise through his first ever game in red and blue, but we were instantly treated to a demonstration as to why the club were so happy to break our previous transfer record to bring him to SE25 from Tyneside.
The interview attached at the top of the page sees Andros in a relaxed and buoyant mood following his Palace debut, speaking openly about the challenges Philadelphia posed to us as well as his thoughts on an individual performance which had our supporters purring from the outset.
Whilst we have been blessed with quality in wide areas through the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Bolasie in recent years, Townsend will only serve to move the bar a notch or two higher in his time with us, having already proven that his trademarked direct style of wing play will be something he looks to implement from the outset of his time at Selhurst Park.
Of course, the vast majority of player interviews see them go through the motions to some extent, but I defy you to watch the above chat with Townsend and not come away impressed by his openness and easy manner in front of the camera.
Make no mistake, when Yannick Bolasie does return to the first-team fold after being granted an extended summer absence, his guaranteed place in Palace’s starting XI will be put under serious threat from Andros. We’re getting stronger all the time.
