As part of Crystal Palace’s pre-season tour of North America, Chris Grierson has spoken to Men In Blazers’ presenter Roger Bennett about the impact the Eagles have made in the US during recent seasons.
Whilst there will always be a section of our club’s fanbase who remain hugely sceptical of the desire to tap into foreign markets, we must all realise that the Premier League “brand” is growing at an explosive pace on the other side of the Atlantic.
Thanks to NBC’s deal with the power brokers behind the scenes, each and every top flight fixture is broadcast live across America, giving millions the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the drama and intrigue of it all at the drop of a hat.
For a club such as ours, this chance to reach a massive new audience who happily approach each game without the deeply drawn geographical divisions of so many in the UK is an understandably exciting prospect. As you can see from Roger Bennett’s interview above, there is a very real chance to capture the hearts and minds of thousands upon thousands with just a little bit of effort on our part.
Thanks to the arrival of Josh Harris and David Blitzer in the boardroom, we have been given a direct route into the media circus that exists within the US market and quite rightly appear intent on cultivating a lasting and genuine relationship with the American football watching public.
Bennett’s appreciation for Palace as a collective entity, boosted massively by his decision to front a four-part documentary on the club in the middle of last season, sees his interview above offer a unique insight into why the authenticity on offer in South London is so intoxicating to those looking on with interest from across the pond.
We may not be able to see it ourselves at times, but the passion Palace fans have for the club is shining through brightly in the wide-eyed world of the US “soccer” fan.
