West Ham’s James Tomkins All Set To Sign For Crystal Palace Today

West Ham United defender James Tomkins looks all set to officially sign for Crystal Palace at some point today following negotiations over the weekend.

This article offers assurances that James Tomkins will be unveiled as a Crystal Palace player before the day is done.

After spending the entirety of his eight year professional career on the Hammers’ books, his decision to leave them just before they make the move to the newly refurbished Olympic Stadium can’t have been an easy one, but it appears as though it has been taken with footballing motivations at the core of the 27-year-old’s thought process.

Having turned pro in 2008, Tomkins has gone on to make an impressive total of 241 appearances for the Irons, bagging 11 goals into the bargain. Whilst many will wonder why he has decided to dessert Slaven Bilic and co., the answer, to those who watch him every week at least, is obvious.

Supposedly far happier when utilised in the centre of defence, Tomkins has apparently grown a tad frustrated at the majority of his appearances in claret and blue coming on the right-hand side of West Ham’s back four, provoking him to explore the market for an opportunity to impress in pastures new from the start of the 2016-17 Premier League season.

The general reaction of a fan-base tends to be a relatively good barometer of a player’s potential success when switching clubs and on that front, the signs are extremely positive in relation to the West Ham academy man. As of yet, we’re still trying to find a Hammer who has a bad word to say about him, a feat which is almost unheard of in the cynical and highly judgemental world of professional football in 2016.

There may be one or two grumbles from our side of the fence regarding the reported transfer fee for Tomkins, but when you consider that we are seemingly getting a perfect replacement for the ageing yet thoroughly dependable character that is Damien Delaney, it begins to make a great deal of sense for all the parties involved.

As you can see from the piece attached at the top of the page, we are supposedly all set to hear official word of Tomkins arrival in SE25 between now and the end of the day. Ridiculously, Crystal Palace’s early summer spending spree continues to roll on.

Life if early July is good, for once.

Alas still not happy with this piece of business could of bought Dunk & the young wolves defender for the same price. An average defender at best and I have zero excitement about it. Let’s hope the next signing wets our taste buds. Would of rather even signed caulker than Tomkins poor business Pardew an over priced player. I will forgive him though as Townsend is a quality buy

Personally will be sad to see Tomkins go, for me he’s been one of our better centre halves over the years. He’s calm on the ball loves to play out rather than smashing it into row Z all the time. A lot of people think he’s an average defender like Spiceboy above he really isn’t. The fee I don’t think can be looked into I think it’s closer to 10 mil rather than 12.5 mil but with all the TV money prices of players will go up and he’s English so that adds a few mil on also.

Whilst i don’t question his ability I do believe players of a similar calibre could be purchased for a smaller fee. The logic behind buying a guy with over 4 years left to run on his deal is rather strange. However i am hoping there is more to come from him and that his motivation to play and be part of something will override the inflated pricetag.

Ok deal as far as I am concerned although price is a bit steep. I am more concerned at present about the rumours of Bolasie going. It would be nice to hear some support from the club for his retention otherwise we are straight back where we started with one good striker in and one out, sorry make that four out because Cham, Adeybayor and now Gayle have all gone and Bolasie would be the fourth!

I’d say the price seems inflated, but we haven’t seen the other deals being negotiated this summer. Bearing in mind the increased prize money this year I’d imagine we were in for a crazy window! Go on Palace to get the ball moving quickly, not missing out as we have for many previous seasons and using the added focus from the cup final before it fades in players/agents minds.

For me Tomkins is a good buy, bringing that level of grit and desire that has made our team (especially our defence) so successful over the last few years.
