Crystal Palace recovered from a 2-0 defecit to run out 3-2 winners in the REMF Charity Match at The Amex Stadium on Monday and now, full highlights of the game have been made available to watch online.
The event, which is now in its 15th year of existence, drew a crowd of over 1,000, with more than £20,000 being donated to the charity over the course of the day, including £5,000 from Palace board member Stephen Browett.
Having fallen behind to two first-half goals from the hosts, a Palace side including Shaun Derry and Andy Johnson were somewhat stunned heading into the break, but following a rousing teamtalk from the always vocal Derry, the lads attacked the second 45 minutes with a renewed sense of confidence.
Jake Newton got Palace back into the game with a well taken finish on the left-hand side of the penalty area after being fed a wonderful through ball by Andy Johnson, before the Eagles were awarded a penalty for a foul on Ryan Scott which AJ confidently dispatched to level the scores at 2-2.
It was then left to the bald goal-machine to finish the game off in style with 87 minutes on the clock; cooly facing up the Brighton keeper in a one-on-one before rounding him and joyously stroking the ball into the back of the empty net to spark wild celebrations throughout the Palace squad. It may not have matched the intensity of some of the occasions Johnson has experienced in a Palace shirt over the years, but he looked to enjoy that goal just as much as any.
Whilst it was undoubtedly a day of triumph for the charity and its organisers, there was no way for them to hide their disappointment at the final score; having looked so comfortable at half-time, but for those representing Palace, there really can’t have been a sweeter way to have won the game.
