The annual charity game played between Crystal Palace and Brighton fans held in memory of Robert Eaton means the world to those who play in it, as the video attached below proves.
This year’s game was the biggest one yet, played in front of more than 1,000 people at The Amex Stadium, Palace manager Ben Long managed to convince Andy Johnson and Shaun Derry to take part, the the former having a huge say in the final score.
The hosts had gone into the half-time interval with a 2-0 lead, but after the break, inspired by a rousing team talk from the aforementioned Derry, the Palace team attacked the game with a renewed sense of vigour.
After battling through the opening minutes of the second period, a great finish from Jake Newton cut the defecit in half, before Palace were awarded a penalty shortly after which AJ, as you would expect, promptly tucked away.
It was then left to the same man to create bedlam in the 87th minute when he found himself closing in on goal. Calmly rounding the keeper and tucking a low shot into the empty net before wheeling away in ecstasy.
The reaction from the bench and those on the pitch is absolutely fantastic, as the entire squad streak down the line to embrace the bald-headed club legend. People were no doubt hoping he’d produce the goods for us on the night and just as he always has done in the past, the little man delivered.
With the annual event getting bigger and bigger, it’s fair to suggest that AJ and Dezza will be involved again next season, with the hope being that the amount raised for charity increases year on year.
We believe that the overall total this time came in at more than £20,000 which is a fantastic achievement for all involved, made all the sweeter by the dramatic late winner our team were given by Andy Johnson and his magic hat.
The video attached at the top of the page really is brilliant. Charity match or not, whenever Crystal Palace play against Brighton, it means a hell of a lot to those involved.
