Crystal Palace are reportedly amongst the leaders in the race to land Liverpool striker Christian Benteke during the summer transfer window following an unremarkable campaign for the Belgian at Anfield.
The towering frontman had joined the Reds with high hopes in the summer of 2015, having bagged an incredibly impressive 49 goals in 101 games during his time with Aston Villa, but the faith shown in him by Brendan Rogers, who willingly shelled out £32.5 million for his services, never transferred itself into a regular run of goals.
Since Jurgen Klopp’s arrival on Merseyside last October, the striker has seen speculation over an imminent move away gather pace, and now, ahead of the German’s first summer in charge of the Champions League chasers, it looks highly likely that a deal will be struck to being his stay in the North West to a rather abrupt end.
It would be easy to write the big man off as a relative flash in the pan, but having almost single-handedly kept Tim Sherwood and Aston Villa afloat in the Premier League during the season before the one just gone, there is no reason to suggest that he couldn’t have a similar impact at a club of the same stature over the coming year or so.
Still only 25, Benteke undoubtedly possesses the skill and physical presence necessary to benefit a whole host of top flight outfits, with the style of play currently used by Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace likely to suit him down to the ground.
As the proud holder of a career goal ratio which currently sits at more than a goal every three games (107 in 279), we are likely to face a level of genuine competition for his signature this summer, particularly if he does well with Belgium, who are hotly tipped to reach the latter stages of Euro 2016 over in France.
Would you be happy to see the Liverpool striker plying his trade in SE25 next term? I certainly wouldn’t be against it.
