Alan Pardew’s post-match interview with Palace TV is now available to watch, with the boss giving his thoughts on a narrow defeat at St James’ Park.
Having perhaps been the better side in the opening 45 minutes, Palace felt themselves coming under pressure in the opening stages of the second half, with Andros Townsend’s wonderfully flighted free-kick sailing into the back of the net at the end of a great spell for the hosts.
From then on, the crowd were behind the Magpies, making life difficult for the players whenever a pass went astray. We did of course get a chance to drag ourselves back to parity from the penalty spot but unfortunately saw Yohan Cabaye’s spot kick saved by Karl Darlow in a moment that only served to intensify the backing the Newcastle players were given from the stands.
Pardew is seen to be in a reflective mood throughout the interview with Chris Grierson, within which he discusses the pattern of play, Cabaye’s penalty miss and the difficulty we will face in putting the FA Cup Final to the back of our minds as we prepare for the last two Premier League fixtures of the season against Stoke and Southampton.
Perhaps it’s a direct byproduct of the nerves he’s been feeling in the build-up to his first return to St James’ Park, but it’s fair to suggest that didn’t look well when put in front of the cameras. Of course, the defeat will have frustrated him hugely, but even so, his face has all the hallmarks of a man who’s not been getting a great deal of sleep.
No doubt he’ll have been happy to see the back of the game, regardless of the final score.
