The meeting of Crystal Palace and Liverpool conjures all sorts of memories, but ahead of this afternoon’s clash, we’d like to take a moment to remember one of the best nights in the history of Selhurst Park.
With Liverpool 3-0 up heading into the closing stages and still well in with a chance of securing their first ever Premier League title, Tony Pulis’ Palace side staged a truly astounding comeback, thanks to goals from Damien Delaney and Dwight Gayle.
It had looked utterly inconceivable just minutes before, but after the Irish central defender got us on the scoresheet with a long-range effort, Gayle popped up with a massive brace, destroying Brendan Rodgers’ title hopes and forcing Luis Suarez to break down in tears on the Selhurst Park turf.
We may not have won the game, but you only need to ask a neutral football fan for their memories of that night to realise what an impact it had in the minds of supporters up and down the country.
It’s on evening’s such as that when our fans come into their own; let’s hope for a repeat in the March sunshine this afternoon.
