Forget the Premier League for a minute or two, Crystal Palace are well and truly on the march in this year’s FA Cup, making it into the quarter-finals for only the sixth time in our history against Tottenham yesterday afternoon.
Backed by 5,000 fans in the away end at White Hart Lane, Alan Pardew’s players produced a much improved performance in comparison to recent weeks, defending stoically throughout and hitting the hosts with a sucker-punch just before the interval thanks to a thunderous right-footed strike from Martin Kelly.
Whilst the statistics may well paint a picture of relative domination from Spurs, the second 45 minutes passed without a huge level of worry for Palace fans, given the improved shape of our formation and genuine threat on the break.
Buoyed by the introduction of Yannick Bolasie midway through the second period, we held a fear factor for Tottenham in the closing stages, who, despite being forced to push for an equaliser with the clock running down, were mindful of our pace and cutting edge, which made an extremely welcome change for our supporters; all of whom have become accustomed to sitting deep without the services of Bolasie since Christmas.
It may well look a bit grim outside your window this morning, but you can watch Martin Kelly’s winning goal again and again via the link attached above if you are in need of cheering up throughout the day.
Whisper it quietly, but Palace are just 90 minutes away from a trip to Wembley and an FA Cup semi-final.
