Jason Puncheon would be the first to admit that the 2015/16 Premier League season hasn’t been his best to date, but when speaking to Chris Grierson yesterday, the Palace man suggested that he has recently turned a corner.
The above video highlights Puncheon’s state of mind heading into the final few months of the campaign, having struggled to reach the heights he did during Alan Pardew’s first term in charge at Selhurst Park. Rather than spewing out the usual platitudes associated with those at the top of the game, Jason remains completely transparent about his own performances throughout the discussion.
Not a player that possesses a huge amount of pace, or indeed the back catalogue of tricks and flicks you would instantly think of when looking towards Wilfried Zaha or Yannick Bolasie, Punch’s style is a far more steady and deliberate one. When he’s on form, he can have a huge influence on any match, remaining utterly unflustered in the most intense of atmospheres.
Hopefully, this chat with the club’s official TV channel will signal a shift in the midfielder’s mentality, given the improvements he saw in his game during our 1-0 win over Mark Hughes’ Stoke City. There is a good chance that he’s been putting too much pressure on his own shoulders each week, but with his manager’s unequivocal backing, a few deep breaths and a period of quiet reflection may do him the world of good.
Make some time to watch the interview, it’s well worth it.
