Yohan Cabaye left Selhurst Park following yesterday’s 1-0 win over Stoke City, having been on the receiving end of a shocking challenge from Stephen Ireland that went completely unpunished.
The immediate aftermath of the tackle saw Stoke come very close to levelling the tie as they broke away with Cabaye still laying stricken on the turf. Jason Puncheon was cautioned for his impassioned protestations over Clattenburg’s decision, prompting those in the stands at Selhurst to shower the referee with abuse.
It would be no exaggeration to suggest that the Eagles faithful have a dreadful relationship with Mark Clattenburg, having seen him refuse to punish West Brom’s Craig Dawson for a horrific elbow to the temple of Julian Speroni at The Hawthorns last season. Whilst a number of referees make mistakes on a regular basis, the frequency with which Clattenburg has got things painfully wrong in our games has led to many suggesting he holds a grudge against us.
There has been no official word over whether or not the tackle will be investigated further by the FA, but given the organisation’s ridiculously outdated rules regarding when they can and cannot take retrospective action, I wouldn’t hold your breath.
It’s an absolute disgrace.
