The first episode of NBC’s fantastic four-part Crystal Palace documentary “Behind The Badge” is now available to watch in full via the link attached below.
This opening episode of NBC’s fly-on-the-wall documentary about the inner-workings of Crystal Palace FC offers supporters an unprecedented level of access to a Premier League football club. Neutral fans will enjoy it, but those of who follow us from week to week will love every second. It’s superb.
Narrated by Match Of The Day’s Gary Lineker, the opening installment revolves around the FA Cup Third Round clash between ourselves and Ronald Koeman’s Southampton at the beginning of January, which also happens to be the last team we won a game and scored a goal.
Having seen one or two trailers for the first episode, it’s clear that a large part of the narrative centres around the tribalism that exists across English football between supporters, with Alan Pardew going out of his way to emphasise the uniquely lively atmosphere that is generated throughout the country each week.
The programme offers supporters an unprecedented level of access to the inner-workings of a top-tier football club, allowing us all to peer behind the figurative curtain and see how the team prepares for a game. For many casual football fans, it will be something of a shock to see such a comprehensive level of access given to a film crew, given the usually sceptical approach those within the game have towards such things.
There is undoubtedly a huge market for English clubs to exploit across the pond, with thousands upon thousands of interested spectators still completely undecided over who they should adopt as their team. Much like Brits when watching the NFL, NHL or NBA, the slightest hint of an emotional connection with one organisation can lay the foundations for a long-term bond to form, which is exactly what Steve Parish and co. will be hoping this documentary series does for the hordes of floating football fans throughout the States.
It’s an absolutely brilliant watch. Enjoy.
