Crystal Palace’s away following tend to make a lot of noise wherever we go, but on Saturday at St Mary’s 5,000 of us made the trip, producing a special atmosphere at a soundtrack for the team’s 2-1 win.
Having taken the lead through Portsmouth academy graduate Joel Ward midway through the first-half, the noise was defeaning, given the desire within our fan base for a prolonged run in this season’s FA Cup.
Unfortunately, Pardew’s men were soon to be pegged back to parity when Romeu levelled for the hosts, tapping in a rebound from a Hennessey save, but that wasn’t to be the last of the goals on the day.
After good work from Fraizer Campbell to recover a lost ball, Jason Puncheon’s searching far post shot was palmed away by Stekelenburg, falling straight at the feet of Wilfried Zaha, who gleefully smashed home a volley from around 10 yards out.
Once again, the away end exploded into a sea of wild arms and legs, encouraged by the maniacal celebrations of Zaha himself, who looked as happy as we’ve ever seen him to have got his name on the scoresheet.
The above video was taken by a home supporter following Joel Ward’s neatly taken opening goal. Whilst we can always be relied upon to produce a solid rendition of “We Love You” this once is a little bit special.
