We all love an away win, particularly when it comes in the FA Cup, and thanks to a spirited performance from the lads at St Mary’s this afternoon, that’s exactly what we got.
Having taken the lead midway through the first-half thanks to Joel Ward’s close-range finish, Pardew’s players found themselves back on level terms after Romeu equalised for the hosts. Luckily, that wouldn’t be how the game ended, thanks to the right boot of a certain Wilfried Zaha.
Following a shot from Jason Puncheon that was pushed away by the Saints’ keeper, the ball fell to Wilf on the left-hand side of goal, allowing him to hit a volleyed shot into the back of the net, sending the 5,000 strong army of travelling supporters into raptures.
Zaha was superb throughout the encounter, working tirelessly both in defence and attack as he and his teammates secured a morale boosting victory after three games without a single goal to our name.
Tuesday night’s trip to Aston Villa will now take up huge importance in the minds of our players and coaching staff alike, but for this evening at least, we can bask in the glow of a great performance on the South Coast.
