Crystal Palace loanee Jake Gray made a major mark on the FA Cup third round earlier this afternoon, when his flying volley put Hartlepool United in front against Championship side Derby County.
Whilst the final score was a disappointing one for the Monkey Hangers, Gray’s third professional goal sparked wild scenes of celebration amongst the home fans, who were given the chance to dream of pulling off an upset thanks to his effort.
Making his way into the penalty area as the hosts piled forward, Gray launched himself towards a cross from the left-hand side of the box and connected beautifully to smash the home side into an unlikely lead over Paul Clements high flyers.
Derby eventually ran out 2-1 winners, thanks to second half goals from Jacob Butterfield and Darren Bent, but for the Crystal Palace academy man, it will be a day he never forgets.
Hopefully Alan Pardew will have taken note of his performance too; we’d all like to see Jake doing this for us at Selhurst one day.
