Let’s be honest, we all saw our lives flash before our eyes when Shane Long ran through on goal in the final seconds of yesterday’s win over Southampton. Luckily, the sizeable frame of Wayne Hennessey was there to prevent a disaster.
Having already pulled off a magnificent flying save midway through the first half when tipping a header over his crossbar, the Welsh number one made sure he kept his clean sheet intact in the dying seconds with an astounding stop from Long’s shot, earning visible praise from the Irishman after the ball had gone into touch.
In a match that was played at a fantastic tempo throughout, all eleven of Palace’s players had to be on top of their game to thwart the Saints from drawing level, but managed to hang on and secure three points that sees us catapulted back into sixth position for the time being.
After gaining a solid draw at Goodison Park on Monday, the good times are definitely rolling in SE25, thanks in no small part on this occasion at least, to the heroics of a certain Wayne Hennessey. Take a bow big man, that save deserves a huge amount of credit.
