Fraizer Campbell may not be getting much of a look-in on the Crystal Palace first-team of late, but it hasn’t stopped the frontman from pulling off a spectacular strike in training this week, so audacious that it simply cannot have failed to catch the eye of Alan Pardew.
We’re sure you’ll agree that this sublime individual effort from Campbell is more than good enough to have graced any of the game’s top footballing arenas, or indeed our Beckenham training base on an overcast Wednesday afternoon. Take a bow, Fraizer.
In what was clearly a moment of true inspiration for the former Manchester United man, he tracks a deep searching cross from the left-hand flank before launching himself into the air and meeting the ball side-on some four to five feet off the ground before volleying it off the bar and into the back of the net.
Quite why the club happened to be filming that exact moment from what looks like a hidden camera amongst the bushes of Beckenham is anybody’s guess, but we as supporters certainly won’t be complaining after getting the chance to see it.
Unfortunately, the club’s decision to upload the footage to their various social media platforms has given way too numerous comments from fans questioning why Fraizer hasn’t been able to produce a similar effort whenever he has played this season, turning what was simply an impressive goal during training, into a source of discontent across our online fan-base.
It’s worth remembering that no other Crystal Palace striker has scored a league goal this season before piling in to criticise Campbell for his own goal tally. In reality, none of our attacking players will be happy with their records in front of goal since August, but the reaction of many in the hours since the goal first appeared online has shone a light on the shift in tone that has occurred since the new campaign began.
For now, take a moment or two to appreciate a truly sublime individual strike from a striker who is no doubt working hard to spark a turnaround in his fortunes. Who knows, he may get his chance against Newcastle this weekend and pull off exactly the same move, setting off wild scenes across the stadium.
