Tottenham winger Andros Townsend could soon be on his way out of White Hart Lane, after an argument with coach Nathan Gardiner.
Whilst the manner of Townsend’s indiscretion remains murky, the fact that he has been told to continue training away from the first-team for the foreseeable future would suggest that his days in North London could well be numbered.
With Mauricio Pochettino having guided Spurs towards a more patient and probing style of play in recent months, Townsend’s all-action style has seen him frozen out of the starting XI to a some extent, fueling rumours that he may well be offloaded in January as a makeweight in a bid for another attacking arrival.
Having seen Spurs linked with moves for both Saido Berahino and our very own Yannick Bolasie for the vast majority of the summer just gone, it wouldn’t be hugely surprising to see either one become the subject of a formal bid from Levy and co. quite possibly with Townsend thrown in to sweeten any potential deal between the clubs.
Although his Tottenham career has stuttered of late, you can’t help but feel that his direct runs and love of shooting would serve him well in SE25, were he to make the switch, with the possibility of a move which saw him and extra funding arrive in exchange for Bolasie almost certain to please plenty of punters at Selhurst Park.
Of course, any chance of Yannick leaving south London remains some way off, following the winger’s decision to sign a contract extension as recently as the summer, but you would assume that an offer of say £5-6 million + Andros Townsend would seriously test the resolve of our board in the New Year.
Ideally, no club would ever need to sell players who are highly prized by their supporters, but for all Yannick’s tricks and flicks, his end product has often left a lot to be desired, leading some to wonder whether or not a swap between him and the aforementioned Spurs wide man would make sense on a number of levels.
We shall see.
