Andros Townsend Set To Be Offered To Palace In January

Tottenham winger Andros Townsend could soon be on his way out of White Hart Lane, after an argument with coach Nathan Gardiner.

Whilst the manner of Townsend’s indiscretion remains murky, the fact that he has been told to continue training away from the first-team for the foreseeable future would suggest that his days in North London could well be numbered.

With Mauricio Pochettino having guided Spurs towards a more patient and probing style of play in recent months, Townsend’s all-action style has seen him frozen out of the starting XI to a some extent, fueling rumours that he may well be offloaded in January as a makeweight in a bid for another attacking arrival.

Having seen Spurs linked with moves for both Saido Berahino and our very own Yannick Bolasie for the vast majority of the summer just gone, it wouldn’t be hugely surprising to see either one become the subject of a formal bid from Levy and co. quite possibly with Townsend thrown in to sweeten any potential deal between the clubs.

Although his Tottenham career has stuttered of late, you can’t help but feel that his direct runs and love of shooting would serve him well in SE25, were he to make the switch, with the possibility of a move which saw him and extra funding arrive in exchange for Bolasie almost certain to please plenty of punters at Selhurst Park.

Of course, any chance of Yannick leaving south London remains some way off, following the winger’s decision to sign a contract extension as recently as the summer, but you would assume that an offer of say £5-6 million + Andros Townsend would seriously test the resolve of our board in the New Year.

Ideally, no club would ever need to sell players who are highly prized by their supporters, but for all Yannick’s tricks and flicks, his end product has often left a lot to be desired, leading some to wonder whether or not a swap between him and the aforementioned Spurs wide man would make sense on a number of levels.

We shall see.

While I can see the argument for bringing in a more direct winger, or at least one who can score a few goals, I don’t think we should belittle the importance Bolasie has for both supporters and teammates. He hasn’t performed to the level of last season yet but he has been on compassionate leave, international duty and been ill – and is improving. It was his shot that was incredibly tipped onto the bar by De Gea and a couple of great crosses late on that nearly brought a winner… Let’s see what happens between now and January, but I think you may not be so open to the exchange when the time comes.

Obvious discipline issues and will be on big bucks; don’t want him and don’t need him.

Tough one to call. Is he inconsistent because he is never given a proper run and isn’t trusted by the manager or is it because he just isn’t a consistent performer?

Bolasie and Zaha are great wingers but do not score enough whereas wingers like Townsend and Sako are all about screamers. Bolasie is off form and would he fit in at spurs now they have Lamela, Son and Njie?

Would be nice to buy a proper goal scorer though as it is the missing piece in the puzzle

Is Townsend any better than our reserve wingers? Most Spurs fans regard him as a bit of a headless chicken who shoots from anywhere but usually misses. Although he’s hit a few goals for England, he rarely does the same for Spurs. 2 goals in 17 appearances last season vs. 4 in 34 for Bolasie. I don’t really see the point in us adding another winger unless he’s an upgrade on Bolasie or Zaha.
