Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle is supposedly on the verge of agreeing a new deal with the club.
As you can see from the link attached above, it looks as though the former Peterborough man is set to put pen to paper of fresh terms in SE25, just months after nearly heading out of the exit door for Norwich City.
Although Dwight is still waiting for his first Premier League goal of the season, Alan Pardew appears to have been won over by what the striker can offer the team, having watched on as the frontman produced a scintillating display against Manchester United last weekend.
Without the presence of Connor Wickham at the head of the side thanks to a long-term injury, Palace have been forced to make do with Gayle, Fraizer Campbell and Patrick Bamford for a fair few weeks, and after what could be described as a rocky start to relations between Dwight and his manager, it now looks as if the general tide of opinion has swung in his favour.
Having seen the aforementioned Wickham return to action for the U21s this afternoon against Bristol City, there is a chance of him making a first-team comeback during this weekend’s trip to face Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Anfield, but, given the lengthy lay-off he’s been forced to endure, the smart money would probably be on Dwight Gayle retaining his place as the team’s lone striker from the start.
The summer months saw the likes of Scott Dann, Yannick Bolasie and James McArthur sign new deals in SE25 and now it looks for all the world as though the diminutive Gayle will follow suit in the coming weeks, no doubt pleasing the numerous backers he has on the terraces of Selhurst Park.
Let’s hope he can celebrate the news with a customary goal against Liverpool this Saturday; it wouldn’t be the first time he’s put the red side of Merseyside to the sword against their wishes.
