Palace TV’s Chris Grierson recently caught up with Crystal Palace’s Player of the Month for September Brede Hangeland to get his views on the fine run of form the team have been enjoying of late.
Despite the Norwegian’s fine displays at the heart of our defence in recent weeks, you will struggle to detect even the merest hint of arrogance in his comments, standing by the belief that his role within the squad is geared solely towards helping the team to win games rather than searching for individual glories.
Speaking highly of both the club’s coaching staff and the manager’s tactical planning, Brede almost makes it sound as though it would be harder for him to turn in bad performances rather than good ones, given the level of preparation that goes into planning for each game, showcasing his well-known modesty when faced with genuine praise.
Reluctant to speak openly about the great start we’ve had to the current campaign without referencing the fact that there is still an extremely long way to go, the towering centre-back is clearly superbly drilled in the art of footballing clichés, having seen plenty of false dawns throughout his years in the game.
As you would expect, after being photographed getting the train home after our victory over Charlton in the Capital One Cup, the interview is conducted at a train station, prompting Grierson to quiz Brede about his reasons for using public transport, before delving into the all-important matter of whether or not he uses an Oyster card to get around.
Undeniably content with life at Selhurst Park, it’s fair to suggest that Brede is enjoying something of an Indian summer after what has been an illustrious career to date. Almost certain to retain his place next to Scott Dann at the heart of our back four for the visit of West Ham this afternoon, Damien Delaney will be wondering if the big man is ever likely to slip up, such has been the calmness he has shown in his recent performances in red and blue.
