Crystal Palace loanee Sullay Kaikai grabbed an assist for Shrewsbury Town last night, as they fell to a 3-2 defeat away to Rochdale.
Having joined the Shrews shortly after Alan Pardew and co. knocked them out of the Capital One Cup at Selhurst Park, Kaikai has enjoyed a decent start to life at New Meadow, with last night’s trip to Spotlands proving to be a decent outing for him on a personal level, even though his teammates eventually fell to a demoralising defeat.
In what was an incredibly hectic opening 45 minutes, Rochdale raced into a three goal lead after just 15 minutes, thanks to goals from Peter Vicenti, Ian Henderson and Jamie Anderson respectively, before Shrewsbury began to mount a comeback 20 minutes later, following a beautifully flighted corner from the aforementioned Kaikai.
Nathanial Knight-Percival managed to get his head to Sullay’s cross, prompting a show of intent from the visitors that saw James Collins covert a penalty kick just six minutes later to draw them to within one goal of Rochdale, but sadly, that was to be the end of the goalscoring for the night.
Shrewsbury toiled away throughout the second period but were unable to pull themselves level, leaving them in 16th place in the League 1 table after 10 games. Given the tightness of the division, there is little reason to suggest that Kaikai and co. can’t kick on from here and mount a challenge for the top six, but with a trip to Coventry City on the horizon, their immediate focus will be on tightening up defensively.
